ADHD Neuropsych Testing in Minneapolis
If you are thinking about going back to school, or maybe your kids are going back to school and it has you thinking about your own ADHD symptoms and finally getting them properly evaluated, it can be confusing finding navigating the complex system of ADHD neuropsychological (neuropsych) testing.
Because I get this question often, and I have personally scoured the current landscape of ADHD neuropsych testing in the Twin Cities, I want to offer to help.
I recently reached out to 6 reputable ADHD testing practices in the Minneapolis area that I trust. I heard back from 4 of them. Here is a summary table of everything I know:
Note: These are not sponsored. I’m not affiliated with them. I do not get any financial compensation, I simply know and trust these individuals. Are there other ones out there that are good? Probably, but I just haven’t met with them yet. If that’s you and you want to be considered for this list, reach out to me here.
These four practices I recommend without reservations. If you complete ADHD testing with any of them, our intake appointment will be only $500 instead of $2000 (full ADHD evaluation).
FAQs regarding neuropsych testing
What is neurospych testing for ADHD?
It is a comprehensive assessment consisting of numerous tests that score aspects of mood, attention, memory, and cognitive ability. All of the above clinics answered that they included all of the following (and some had even additional ones): WAIS-IV (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale), WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children), Conners-3 CPT and Rating Scales, BRIEF-A (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function - Adult), and a diagnostic clinical interview. All of them also include a feedback session and a write-up report of the findings that are yours to keep.
Who can do neuropsych testing for ADHD?
Usually performed by neuropsychologists (PhD credentials with additional training). Another common credential is PsyD.
How is neuropsych testing for ADHD different from ADHD evaluations done by other mental health professionals?
In short, neuropsych testing is much more comprehensive. You can read about the difference of ADHD evaluation and neuropsych testing here. ADHD evaluations performed by psychiatrists (like myself) and other mental health professionals (LICSW or similar) are usually a lot more narrow in scope- ADHD only.
Why complete a full neuropsych assessment if I only want to know about ADHD?
You don’t have to. You can choose an ADHD only evaluation with me or another reputable practice specializing in ADHD. But if the results come back inconclusive, you might have to do neuropsych testing anyway to clarify the diagnosis. If all you care about is ADHD or not-ADHD answer, then neurospych testing may be superfluous.
When should I choose to do an ADHD evaluation with ADHD Alliance of MN?
This offering is perfect if you are only concerned about ADHD and have already decided that if the evaluation confirms this, you want to get started with medication treatment right away, without waiting for another referral or appointment. The medication management part is not offered by any neuropsych testing clinic, as they are not prescribing clinicians. Otherwise, if you want a comprehensive assessment or are not sure about pursuing medication treatment, I recommend completing a neuropsych evaluation.
